Service Description

Eye Movement Integration (EMI) is a therapeutic approach designed to support individuals in processing and integrating distressing, overwhelming, or traumatic experiences. At times, experiences can remain insufficiently integrated, becoming associated with intense emotions, beliefs, images, bodily sensations, or patterns of responding. These experiences may continue to influence how a person feels, thinks, and reacts in the present, even when they intellectually understand that the event is in the past. During an EMI session, a trained practitioner guides the individual to briefly access aspects of a particular experience while following a series of specific eye movements across the visual field. These carefully guided eye-movement patterns are intended to engage different areas of visual and cognitive processing, supporting the integration and reorganisation of the experience. EMI is a gentle, client-centred approach. Rather than requiring extensive verbal discussion or detailed retelling of an experience, the individual is supported to work with what arises at their own pace. The process may involve memories, images, emotions, thoughts, bodily sensations, or other internal experiences. As processing takes place, distress associated with the experience may decrease, while the memory can become more integrated and less disruptive in the present. Individuals may also develop greater emotional distance, new perspectives, and a stronger sense of safety and self-understanding. EMI may be used to support people experiencing the effects of trauma, anxiety, phobias, distressing memories, grief, and other emotionally overwhelming experiences. Treatment is tailored to each individual and proceeds according to their readiness, needs, and therapeutic goals. If this is for you, let us embark on this journey together. Each EMI intervention begins with a 1-hour intake session, followed by either a 1.5-hour or 2-hour EMI session. EMI is targeted toward processing a specific traumatic event. In many cases, one EMI session may be sufficient to address the identified event; however, depending on the complexity and severity of the experience, two to three sessions may be required.
